Ways to Help Your Child Memorize Addition Math Facts

There are a number of ways to help a child memorize and practice math facts. I will point you to some excellent online resources. These are the best that I found to help my own child. They include printable worksheets, online games, iPad apps and online flashcards. I have another article that includes two games to play with your child. One is a flashcard game and the other involves using a dry erase mat with spinners.

For fast learning, try to have your child do one of each item everyday. For example, they should do one mad minute worksheet, play one online game, one iPad game, one flashcard game and one game with a parent. Try to break it up throughout the day, if possible. The more they do, the faster they will learn. But you don't want to create frustration by having them do too much at one time.

I highly recommend Super Teacher Worksheets. These are minute math drills (or math mad minutes). The idea behind these is to have a child solve as many problems as they can within a fixed period of time, such as a minute.

You can also use these sheets as traditional math sheets. I am working on addition with my child and I like these particular sheets because they give a choice of having the first addend go up to either 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. The second addend will only go up to 9. I recommend going worksheet by worksheet. Focus on the first sheet that goes up to 2, then move onto the worksheet that goes up to 3, and so on.

Math War is a card game that can make learning math facts a lot of fun for kids. You can buy math war cards for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Basically you deal the deck of cards to each player. In each round the player with the highest answer wins. You can also come up with your own variations on the game. Math War is easy enough that you could do it with a kindergartner and perhaps a preschooler.

The customized game allows you to choose your own addends. You can also find games for subtraction, multiplication and division.

Fact Monster has an excellent online addition flashcard game with 7 levels. Children earn stars for each correct answer and for each set finished. Subtraction, multiplication and division are also included.
